Development, structure and distribution of colleters in Mandevilla illustris and M. velutina (Apocynaceae) Rev. Bras. Bot.
APPEZZATO-DA-GLÓRIA,BEATRIZ; ESTELITA,MARIA EMÍLIA MARANHÃO.
Colleters of Mandevilla illustris and M. velutina are present on the cotyledons, shoot apices, mature leaves and on the nodal region, where they are interpetiolar and intrapetiolar. In M. velutina there are two colleters on the adaxial basal part of the leaf blade, and in M. illustris, this number varies. The differentiation of the colleters occurs in the early stages of leaf development. When colleters are mature, they consist of a long head on a short stalk. The central core of the colleter is made up of parenchymatous cells that may exhibit phenolic compounds and is surrounded by radially elongated epithelial cells. The foliar and intrapetiolar colleters can exhibit vascularization. The colleters produce a translucient sticky substance that reacts...

Histological changes in banana explants, cv. Nanicão (Musa spp., Group AAA), submitted to different auxins for induction of somatic embryogenesis Rev. Bras. Bot.
FILIPPI,SILVIA BALBÃO; APPEZZATO-DA-GLÓRIA,BEATRIZ; RODRIGUEZ,ADRIANA PINHEIRO MARTINELLI.
The present work analyzes the behavior of banana explants, cv. Nanicão (Musa spp. Group AAA) regarding somatic embryogenesis induction treatments with several auxins. Longitudinal segments of shoot meristematic apices of micropropagated banana plantlets cultivated and rooted in vitro were introduced in culture medium containing dicamba, picloram, 2,4-D or NAA in different concentrations. Explant samples were collected at 0, 7 and 10 days and prepared for light microscopy. Histological sections were used for comparison of the histological changes occurring after induction treatment with different auxins. Embryogenic response was observed only in treatments with picloram or dicamba, with distinct embryogenic regions observed at 14 and 21 days in culture,...

Seasonal variation of the essential oil from two Brazilian native Aldama La Llave (Asteraceae) species Anais da ABC (AABC)
OLIVEIRA,TUANE S. DE; BOMBO,ALINE B.; OLIVEIRA,ADRIANA S.S. DE; GARCIA,VERA L.; APPEZZATO-DA-GLÓRIA,BEATRIZ.
ABSTRACT Aldama arenaria and A. robusta are morphologically similar aromatic species that have seasonal development. The yield and chemical composition of essential oils from aerial and underground vegetative organs of these species were compared to verify the production of volatile metabolites in flowering and dormant phases of development and to identify if there are unique compounds for either species. The major compound in the essential oils from A. arenaria leaves was palustrol (16.22%) and for aerial stems was limonene (15.3%), whereas limonene (11.16%) and α-pinene (19.64%) were the major compounds for leaves and aerial stems from A. robusta, respectively. The major compound for the underground organs was α-pinene, in both species and phenological...

Structures related to resprouting potential of two Myrtaceae species from Cerrado: morpho-anatomical and chemical studies Anais da ABC (AABC)
SILVA,GABRIELA S. DA; FERRARO,ALEXANDRE; OGANDO,FELIPE I.B.; AGUIAR,CLAUDIO L. DE; APPEZZATO-DA-GLÓRIA,BEATRIZ.
Abstract Resprouting is a functional trait in species which occur in fire-prone ecosystems. These plants can resprout from aerial buds and by recruiting belowground bud bank using carbohydrates allocated in roots as resource. In this study, we present morpho-anatomical features and chemical composition related to the resprouting potential of two species of Eugenia L. in an area of the Cerrado (Brazilian savanna) under regeneration, after the clear-cutting of Pinus sp. with the later burning of pine needles layer. We used standard histological techniques for belowground organs analysis and aerial buds protection degree. Belowground buds in layer from soil surface down to 10 depth were counted and the chemical analyses were performed on roots. In all aerial...

The developmental anatomy of the subterranean system in Mandevilla illustris (Vell.) Woodson and M. velutina (Mart. ex Stadelm.) Woodson (Apocynaceae) Rev. Bras. Bot.
APPEZZATO-DA-GLÓRIA,BEATRIZ; ESTELITA,MARIA EMÍLIA MARANHÃO.
Two species of Mandevilla from the savanna area of São Paulo State, Brazil were studied. These species have been prescribed as folk medicine as infusions or alcoholic extracts of the underground system for treatment of venomous snake bites. To explain the morphological nature of such a system, its ontogeny was described to determine which parts are involved in its formation. In both Mandevilla species examined, the underground system consists of a xylopodium whose basal region joins a tuberous root.
